During this January’s landmark paddle session at Peahi on Maui, a mysterious, unsponsored figure fitted in a buoyancy jacket and inflatable wetsuit infiltrated a well-branded cadre of big-wave demigods to stroke his 10’2″ Al Merrick quad (aka “The Magic Carpet”) into several monsters — becoming the first Australian surfer to paddle into Jaws — at 50 feet, no less.
