Meanwhile, over at Mavericks, the season-opening session launched on Friday with a solid 14ft@17 secs WNW swell pulsing into the West Coast.

On hand to wrangle with those conditions were some of your favorite protagonists including Jamie Mitchell, Pete Mel, Bianca Valenti, Pat Shaughnessy, Nathan Florence and many more.

The pulse that set Mavs off, from a few days before this session went down. With a swell peaking at 14ft@17 secs, it was always going to draw a crowd.

“Always good to see all the boys in the lineup and blow the cobwebs out,” writes Mr. Mitchell. “Once again it reminded me how heavy this wave is and why I love it.”

“Friday’s opening swell for the Mavericks season brought surfers from around the globe; Jamie Mitchell in from Portugal, Will Skudin from New York, Nathan Florence and Nathan Fletcher, from Hawaii,” says our lens in the channel, Audrey Lambidakis.

“There were a few wide swinging waves, and a seven-hour lull during higher tide. The lulls were brutal. For those that were patient the lower tide and thinned crowd made for a fun sunset session with mostly locals enjoying the wave.

“Our boat was nearly caught out by one of those wide swingers. I was catapulted into the air as our boat punched through the wave. Jamie Mitchell pulled me down, midair, keeping me from flying off the boat. An adrenaline kick for sure.”

Regular Mavs charger, Bianca Valenti, said: “Fills my heart with so much joy when the Northern Pacific comes to life for the winter. What a pleasure surfing opening day at Mavericks with Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to pioneer the heavy water spot, she is such a heroine and a true inspiration. So much stoke.”

Pulling out some futurology here and the forecast is looking interesting over the next few days, thanks to Typhoon Lan, which is currently tracking east of Japan. If the current path hold, it’s looking like that’ll steam right into the West Coast of the States, delivering swell to Hawaii on the way. Could we see the WSL’s Jaws event green-lit? What about Mavs? Either way looks like we’re about to be spoiled for choice.
