A couple quick thoughts with Germany’s first Women’s Pipe champion

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 May 2017 – Frankie Harrer is part of a growing number of cross-continental surfers raised in more than just one country. Born in Germany but groomed for surf dome in the rights of Malibu, goofy footer Frankie has been a steady blip on the surf media radar. This year her presence increased as she won the Wahine Pipe Pro in what she called the best QS waves she’s seen.

This month she took part in the Surfersvillage Interview sending back quite possibly the briefest answers we’ve yet received (except maybe for the bizarre quips we got from Christian Fletcher last year). Read on below for a quick glimpse into the thoughts of Frankie Harrer.

How would you describe what you do for work to a very small, inattentive child?
I surf!!

What is that you do professionally that you are most proud of?
I really like being able to find balance whether it’s between free surfing and contest surfing or working hard and having fun free time, just really balance in life, so if I can achieve that that’s something I’m proud of.

You are German, but you grew up in California? We don’t quite understand. Please explain.
Yeah, my parents are both German but moved to California just before I was born. I grew up going back and forth, and also spoke German at home.

What are you currently working on that you’re really excited about?
I’m really excited about working on my competitive career the next couple of years and getting to see the training and practice pay off. I’m also excited about doing a few cool free surf trips to surf some good waves!

Share with us your biggest Rocky Balboa moment (you know, punching meat in a freezer then running up the steps of City Hall with your own special theme music blaring.)
I think everyone has those moments throughout a career when they really doubt themselves and feel down. I’ve definitely had them! So just being able to pick yourself back up and find confidence again feels so good!

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? Selling shoes?
If I wasn’t doing this I’m not sure what I’d be doing! Probably not selling shoes… haha. But I think if I didn’t choose this path at a young age I probably would have found another passion to work on!
