| Opening season day at Mavericks - Half Moon Bay registered a big NW 29 feet at 20 seconds at the buoy. The swell was very steep, coming from between 290 and 300 degrees. Some bombs that hit Mavs caught everyone inside.
If it weren't for the strong winds (15-30 knots) and super high tide (6' feet), Mav's would have been perfect condition!

| October 22,-23, 2009 Yeti - With giant surf pounding the coastline, local Oregon surfers from Lincoln City and Newport, Tim Henton of Oregon Surf Shop, Mark Bulider, Dan Hassleschwert, Ollie Richardson, Jedi-Johnny Knape, Paul Bradley and Keith Galbraith along with Eric Akiskalian of Towsurfer.com scored a solid two days of the Yeti. Joining the local crews were, big wave hell-men Kealii Mamala, Chad Jackson, Shawn 'Barney' Barron and Sage Huls who all flew over from Hawaii and California to take advantage of the swell. |

| Dungeons Roars To Life - As the name suggests, Dungeon's is not a place for the faint of heart. Located not much more than a stone's throw from Cape Town, South Africa, the weather is raw, the sea angry and the waves ferocious. Did I mention the prehistoric Megalodon known as "the submarine" that calls adjacent Hout Bay home? If all that doesn't deter you from giving it a go, when you straighten out on a 20-foot wave or get caught inside by a gargantuan set, you get washed into a fur seal colony where the main thoroughfare is called "Shark Alley." So if the waves don't kill or seriously maim you, there's a good chance something else will. Sounds like fun, eh? Well, just this past week Billabong XXL Award winners Greg Long and Grant "Twiggy" Baker joined a hearty crew of locals for what most are calling the best day of big surf to hit the infamous break in some years. | Red Bull Big Wave Africa Event 2008 - Hout Bay, Cape Town - Grant Baker is the 2008 Red Bull Big Wave Africa champion!
In firing 15 to 20-foot surf Twiggy caught two excellent waves to emerge victorious in a truly international final. Two South Africans, two Americans, a Brazilian and a Hawaiian surfer made up the final heat, with the South African taking the win. "The best day of big wave surfing in South Africa to date!" said webcaster Gigs Cilliers as the event drew to a close. |

From Oaxaca to Mazatlan, there's countless options. On this past swell, SURFING Associate Photo Editor Sam Olson chose one and teamed up with Nathan Fletcher for his upcoming Seven Days Profile.
